How Architecture Decides What AI Argues

Every AI system has a persuasion philosophy baked in, whether the builders chose one or not. Here's how to choose on purpose.

A 2025 study published in Nature Human Behaviour found that GPT-4, given access to basic demographic information about its debate opponent, had 81.7% higher odds of changing that opponent's mind than a human debater with the same information.[1]

That number should make you pause. Not because persuasive AI is inherently wrong. Persuasion is the oldest human technology. A good teacher persuades you to care about the subject. A good doctor persuades you to take the medication. A good salesperson persuades you that solving this problem is worth the investment.

The question isn't whether AI should help humans persuade. The question is where the line is. And whether your architecture has a line at all.
