A CEO is presenting to her board. The slide says "AI Strategy: Q3 Update." She has news. They've rolled out AI-powered customer service across four product lines. The vendor promised 60% autonomous ticket resolution. They're seeing eight. The roadmap shows they'll get there by Q1.
The CTO is in the room. He knows the platform underneath. He knows what 60% autonomous resolution would actually require, structurally. He knows the platform cannot do it. Not by Q1. Not by Q1 of the following year. Not on any horizon that doesn't include rewriting the basement. He doesn't say so. The board hears another quarterly update where AI is just around the corner. They approve the vendor's contract renewal because the relationship is going well.
This scene plays out four times a year in every public-company boardroom in America right now.
